Three Happiness - Grand Rapids
Posted by admin under GRAND RAPIDS, KENT COUNTY
3330 Alpine Ave NW
Grand Rapids, MI 49544-1669
(616) 785-3888
Dinner at Three Happiness is as likely to be a reunion with old friends as it is a chance to load up on reasonably priced, tasty Chinese food.
The restaurant, which originally opened in 1990, is celebrating its return to the Alpine Avenue dining scene after a roughly six-year absence. The family eatery closed in 2002, when the owners decided to “pursue something different.”
“We wanted to do something else, (though) the restaurant is our passion,” said manager Richard Ngo. “We were doing good business.”
The spot — in a shopping plaza that also houses Target — was filled by China Palace, a restaurant that didn’t fare as well. Ngo said the Three Happiness crew decided to give it a second shot when the owner of the space contacted them and asked if they would like to reopen. Two months ago, they did just that.
“We see a lot of customers coming back,” Ngo said, adding it’s interesting to see customers who have “married and had kids” in the time the restaurant was closed.
Three Happiness specializes in Mandarin, Hunan and Szechuan cuisine, and Ngo said customer favorites include sesame chicken ($9.75), chop suey ($7.50-$8.75) and egg foo young ($6.75-$8.75).

During our first visit, we were struck by the restaurant’s welcoming spirit and the friendly staff. Our server was amicable and fast, arriving with a pot of complimentary hot tea less than two minutes after we were seated.
The menu is extensive, with more than a dozen appetizers and soups and more than 100 entrees, including seafood, chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian dishes, subgum, fried rice, lo mein, chop suey and chow mein.
For starters, I ordered the vegetable soup ($2), while my guest, Adam, chose the crab cheese ($3.35). My soup was a clear broth with thick slices of fresh carrot, pea pods, napa, mushrooms and cubes of tofu. The base could have used more bouillon or a strong miso infusion, but the veggies were firm and flavorful.
Adam’s wontons — always a favorite — came right from the deep-fryer; hot and crisp on the outside and smooth and chewy on the inside. Though we were happy to taste a smattering of fresh scallion in the cheese mix, the crab pieces were barely detectable.
My vegetarian delight ($7.75) was the strongest contender of the night. The Three Happiness version of the Chinese restaurant stalwart was a giant platter of sliced and diced vegetables lightly sauteed in a white chef’s sauce.
The sauce was a bit easy on the seasoning and could have benefited from a touch of garlic or onion. The vegetables — water chestnut, broccoli, carrot, mushrooms, pea pods, Chinese cabbage — were fresh and substantial, especially the broccoli.
Adam was lukewarm on the sweet and sour pork ($8.45) served with green peppers, carrots and onions. The pieces of deep-fried and battered pork were chewier than he’s accustomed to and the dish came without pineapple, but the vegetables were plentiful. The entrees came with a bowl of steamed white rice to share.
The chefs at Three Happiness are on the generous side, and Adam and I had enough leftovers for two additional meals — score! Ngo boxed the food for us at our table, making friendly conversation before presenting us with dessert — a small plate of complimentary treats: orange wedges, almond cookies and fortune cookies.
Fans of Three Happiness who have missed the spot — and might overlook it on bustling Alpine Avenue — should be pleased to welcome the return of the cordial staff and its value-rich menu.
